A Nightmare on Elm Street
* Its claimed that Wes Craven the director of the nightmare on elm street films named Freddy Krueger after a kid who bullied him in school and that he based Freddy's hideous burned appearance on a disfigured hobo who scared him as a teenager. Another account has it that upon looking out of his window a 10 year old Wes Cravens gaze was met by a drunk man dressed in the green and red striped jumper and hat which Freddy would later make iconic. This drunk man waslooking directly at him and continued to stare at him for several minutes. This scared him so much that he used the drunks clothing as the inspiration for Freddy Krugers later on
*Wes Craven is said to have based part of the movie on 3 incidents involving young Cambodians, survivors of Pol Pot's genocidal "purges", all of whom died while apparently in the throws of horrific nightmares. These fit young and healthy people would have a horrible nightmare, then refuse to sleep for as long as possible; when they finally fell asleep from sheer exhaustion they awoke with screaming and writhing, then died from a heart attack. In the last incident, the young man fearing for his life desperately tried many things to stay awake on learning about this Wes Cravern incorporated some of his methods and thoughts into the film, including a hidden coffee pot and some of the dialouge eg the attempts by Nancy to convince her unbelieving parents that going to sleep would kill her are inspired by things the young boy had said to his parents.
