Bladrunner
*
This was the first major film to be re-released with a directors cut. There is a question mark about how many replicants there are in both releases
a replicant who dies before Deckard's roof top battle with Batty is alluded to. Bryant of the blade running department initially tells Deckard there are four "skin jobs" on the loose, but minutes later says six escaped, and one was killed by the "electronic gate", which should leave five.
This mysterious unaccounted for replicant was originally scripted as Mary, but time and budgetary constraints resulted in her being written out. Scott only used half of the new dialogue, resulting in the inconsistency and leaving room for speculation or confusion about where and who
the missing android was.
*
The first draft of the screenplay written in 1980 by Hampton Fancher makes it clear that Deckard is human. Mary features in this draft. Batty kills Tyrell his bodyguard maid and family in his mansion rather than at the Tyrell corporation. Though Deckard and Rachael escape from the already pregnant distopian city into the country Deckard kills Rachael knowing that another Blade Runner would have done it eventually.
*
The next draft co-written by David Webb Peoples has a sixth replicant, Hodge who attacks Batty and Gaff at Leon's flat. Mary who is in this draft is killed by Deckard in Sebastian's apartment. The Tyrell Corporation is called "the Nekko Corporation". Leon disguises himself as a Russian in a bar getting close to Deckard before attacking him. Leon is still faster than Deckard who needs to be rescued by Rachael. In this draft Tyrell turns out to be a replicant after killing him, Roy forces Sebastian to take him to the real Tyrell who has been cryogenically frozen awaiting a cure for a terminal disease. In this draft, Batty saves Deckard who whilst human in this draft empaphizes with the replicants reffereing to Batty as his late brother. Deckard is warned by Bryant that Gaff is after him. Rachael asks Deckard to kill him so another Blade Runner can't do it.
*
The 1981 draft has Deckard saying he doesn't want to kill Pris or Batty. At the end, Deckard and Rachael flee the city; Gaff's spinner is seen in the distance chasing them. Otherwise it is
fairly similar to the final movie.
The error concerning the number of replicants was dealt with in the never-made sequel to the movie (which was instead made into a novel) in which Deckard is the remaining replicant.
