* When Ben leaves to shut down the tractor beam on the death star, Chewbacca growls something to which Han says "Boy, you said it Chewie". Backstage footage reveals that what Chewie says is "The old man's gone mad".
* After the trash-compactor scene the Chewbacca suit smelt for the rest of the film.
Mark Hamill (Luke) held his breath for so long during the trash compactor scene that he broke a blood vessel in his face after that face shots of him are from one side only.
*The model used for the first ship seen in the first scene of the film has a tiny Playboy centerfold in its cockpit. These aren't visible on screen, though and are only revealed by backstage info or close inspection of the model.
* Peter Cushing found the boots that came with his costume extremely uncomfortable to wear so he only wore them in the few shots in which his feet could be seen. In all other shots, Cushing wore a pair of fluffy slippers.
* The name Wookiee came about when a San Fransisco DJ working with Lucas made a blunder and exclaimed, "I think I ran over a wookiee back there." The DJ admitted that he didn't know what a wookie was saying he simply made it up. Lucas never forgot the cute word and used it years later in Star Wars.
Chewbaccas "voice" is a combination of several animals including badgers, walrus and camels.
