David Lynch was offered the chance to direct this episode of the series first. He declined though believing it was "Lucas' thing."

The warrior tribe at the end of this film was originally supposed to be a tribe of Wookies. In pre-production, though, the decision was made to go to short creatures with short fur rather than very tall creatures with longer fur and, hence, the Ewoks were created. Dont fear chewbacca fans though because apparently we get to see a tribe of Wookies in battle in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005).

It is rumored that a scene featuring the marriage between of Leia and Han Solo was originally shot as an alternative ending

Apparently the Millennium Falcon was not supposed to make it out of the exploding Death Star hence Han saying "I just got a funny feeling, like I'm not gonna see her again"
